Cleaner Shore Africa - World Clean-Up Day 2024

Local initiatives promoting sustainability.

Cleaner Shore Africa - World Clean-Up Day 2024

Cleaner Shore Africa, launched by the All-Africa Students Union’s Environment and Climate Action Working Group, is a transformative initiative focused on instilling environmental consciousness and protecting coastal environments. Through community engagements, educational campaigns, regular beach clean-ups, and monitoring systems, the initiative fosters collaboration among local communities, schools, government bodies, and environmental organizations to promote shared responsibility for coastal well-being.

The flagship project took place on World Clean-Up Day 2024 at Laboma Beach, Accra on the 21st of September 2024, in partnership with Let’s Do It Ghana and 34 sustainability organizations. The event addressed the growing waste crisis, particularly plastic pollution, by combining clean-up activities, recycling efforts, and awareness creation. Volunteers of all ages actively participated in clearing harmful plastics and debris, showcasing the power of collective action in driving environmental change.

The day featured a morning aerobics session to energize volunteers, followed by the distribution of PPE to ensure safety during the clean-up. Volunteers focused on waste collection and sorting, emphasizing plastic recycling. Health services, including hydration, health check-ups, and massages, provided holistic care for participants. Additional activities included eco-friendly exhibitions of upcycled items and a rugby league match organized by Rugby League Ghana, blending inspiration and entertainment.

The initiative resulted in significant outcomes: enhanced environmental awareness, strengthened partnerships between public and private entities, visible improvements to Laboma Beach, and meaningful community engagement. Cleaner Shore Africa and World Clean-Up Day 2024 demonstrated the potential of education, action, and collaboration in advancing sustainable waste management and environmental stewardship
